Residential & Commercial Electrical Frequently Asked Questions

Q: ARE LED LIGHTS BETTER THAN INCANDESCENT?

A:

Q: DO I NEED A SPECIAL ELECTRICAL BOX TO INSTALL A CEILING FAN?

Q: WHAT DOES “GROUNDING” MEAN?

A:

Grounding is a technique that involves electrically reconnecting you to the earth or the “ground”. When you use an electrical appliance, the current flows from your service panel to the device. A grounded wire gives the unused electrical current a safe way back to the service panel so there’s no danger in the event of a short circuit.

Q: WHEN SHOULD I CALL AN ELECTRICIAN?

A:

You should call an electrician for many reasons. When you are resetting circuit breakers or changing fuses too often, when you turn on your air conditioner and the lights dim in the room, and when your lights flicker or go on and off. You should also call an electrician when you can smell something burning, when you have six electronic devices plugging into one outlet, when you have receptacle outlets overburdened by multi-plug strips, when a three-prong plug needs a two-prong adapter, and if you have to run extension cords to plug in electrical devices. There are many other reasons why and when you should call an electrician, of course, and you should always consult an electrician if you ever have electrical questions.

Q: HOW IS A COMMERCIAL ELECTRICIAN DIFFERENT FORM A NORMAL ELECTRICIAN?

A:

A commercial electrician has the experience and knowledge to professionally address any electrical situation in a commercial building. Conduit bending and working with higher voltages are a few of the differences in skills from a residential electrician. TAP and Sons Electricians are professionally trained and have the necessary skill sets needed to perform both residential and commercial electrical services!

Q: HOW OFTEN SHOULD I REPLACE MY SMOKE DETECTORS?

A:

You should replace your smoke detectors every 5-7 years and you should replace the batteries every 6 months. With all the dust particles in the air, it can be very easy for the sensors in a smoke detector to get clogged.

Q: WHY DO GFI OR GFCI (GROUND FAULT CIRCUIT INTERRUPTER) OUTLETS ALWAYS TRIP?

A:

GFI or GFCI outlets tend to trip when too much equipment or appliances are plugged into the GFI. GFI’s are meant to protect people from receiving electric shocks. For that reason, they do not like large motors. For example, the biggest failure is using the GFI protected device in the garage for a second refrigerator. If this is the case, in order to protect the GFI, a dedicated line should be installed.

Q: ARE WHOLE HOUSE SURGE PROTECTORS WORTH IT?

A:

Yes, whole house surge protectors are worth it. When installed correctly, a whole house surge protector will protect all the circuits in the home. However, trained and highly skilled electricians will always recommend still using individual surge protectors on devices for extra protection.
